Documentary film, 1994-
In 1994, I was offered the opportunity to produce a documentary on Ethiopia. The subject was a research project searching for solutions to devastating soil erosion - a cause of poverty and inadequate food security. This initiated my transition from still photography to the moving picture. As most documentary productions were low-budget, the usual setup was the "one-man band", reinforced with on-location teams. This immersion led to intimate knowledge of local conditions and to lasting friendships.
Some of the projects that impressed me most:
"War-torn Societies Project": reconciliation in countries affected by civil wars, with production in Somalia and Mozambique.
"Coca and the failure of alternative development": unfinished project on Coca eradication in Bolivia along with the associated poverty and violent repression.
"Water conflicts in the Mount Kenya area": water scarcity and social conflicts.
